The history of the city began in May 1703 with the appearance on the banks of the Neva fortress, named in honor of St Petersburg. Initially, Peter I thought only about access to the European seas, shipyards and fleet, but by 1712 the King decided to move the capital, and with it all the functions of the state. To some extent, in that part of the history of the country, the idea is not without meaning, because where there is a sovereign, there is a state.
In the construction of the new city invested all the forces and capabilities of the country. Despite the difficulties, capricious Baltic climate, harsh living conditions in which the serfs worked and lived, the city was being implemented before our eyes, surprising overseas guests with the pace of development. But as often happens with the death of the ruler-initiator of change, the driving force of his ideas gradually began to fade. On the other hand, after the Peter's leap, the country needed to breathe out and rest.
